About the New Canning Line

We have previously announced the brewery’s transition from glass bottles to cans, and we are now a great step closer to fulfilling this goal. Earlier in May, we released ÅBEN’s first canned beer, Indian Summer. For you who would like to learn more about the thoughts that went into the canning line setup at the brewery, please read on.

The decision of phasing out the use of glass bottles to replace with cans, has been an ambition for a long time for various reasons (read more about the pros of switching to cans here). After much research and consideration the choice ended on Cask’s ACS V5 automated canning system.

It is a 6 headed filler which pre-purges the cans with CO2 before filling up with beer. The choice landed on this machine as it is well known for a low DO pickup - referring to the level of dissolved oxygen during the canning process. You want to keep this as low as possible, as oxygen is really harmful for the beer’s durability.

The machine automatically weights the cans and discards any that has not been filled up properly. As we have no option to check this manually - like we currently can with glass bottles - we can in this way ensure that all cans are filled up as they should.

Finally, due to the machine’s automation we can dramatically improve the speed of emptying our vessels. The machine can run 2,400 cans in an hour - or put in a different way, it can empty one of our vessels in around 2 hours. This includes labelling, marking the date and canning the beer. Compared to our current setup with glass bottles, this takes approximately 16 hours for us to empty a vessel - before even starting with the labelling and date marking.

There is no doubt that this machine will help improve the efficiency at the brewery, as well as providing you with a better experience. Order Indian Summer from the webshop now, to taste the first ÅBEN beer on a can. Order Indian Summer from the webshop now,
