Canning Our Way to a Sustainable Future
For ÅBEN it is central to be mindful of the traces we leave on our environment and constantly improve every step we take to minimise our impact and improve your beer experience. Therefore we have made the decision to start phasing out the use of glass bottles to replace with cans in the next months to come.
The use of glass bottles has been iconic for our beginning as a brewery - not least because our unique design was developed with the glass bottle in mind. However, due to the incredible interest and the pace we are working at, we have come to a point where a transition to cans is the right decision. Not only will it benefit our environmental impact, it will also in several instances improve the taste of the beer, and provide you with an even better experience.
By using cans we can better control and maintain the right beer taste. First of all, due to the fact that sunlight will no longer be able to get through to the beer and impact the taste as it is possible with glass bottles. Second, and most importantly, we limit the risk of oxidation - which is one of the worst enemies in brewing.
As cans are smaller and made of aluminium, they take up less space and are light-weighted which means that we can ship larger quantities while reducing our environmental impact. For several reasons, aluminimum is a better reusable material than glass and it is also more durable and does not risk breaking into pieces as easily as glass bottles.
We are very excited about this transition, and are happy to embark on an even more sustainable journey. Hopefully, you will all welcome the new ÅBEN cans just as well as we have felt the recognition of our bottles.
In line with this transition, a rethink of our design and brand has also been initiated. Read on to learn more about what goes into designing a beer label from the words of our own Head of Design in the next post “In the Mind of our Designer”.
