ÅBEN × GAMMA
In April we could finally get together with our good friends from GAMMA and brew something really special. It is a collab that has been long under way due to the recent lockdown, and something we have been looking forward to ever since we returned from our joined trip to New Zealand more than a year ago.
In March 2020, ÅBENs founder Philip Hulgaard teamed up with Jakob Houmøller, owner of GAMMA, and went to New Zealand to explore some of the world’s best hops. Unaware of the critical situation unfolding back home in Denmark, they went on to visit some of New Zealand’s largest freshwater springs - known for being some of the clearest lakes on earth. Inspired by the calmness of the clear water and the fact that the whole world was changing around them, this beer has turned into something special.
All the hops they brought home from New Zealand went into the beer - a total of 8 different types. Symbolising the calmness in the chaos the beer has been named Te Waikoropupū - the local name for the freshwater springs.
Brewed with 40 kg of hops, it has become a sweet, hazy double IPA batting in at 8.1%. The hops used in the beer are: Nectaron, Moutere, Motueka, Riwaka, Nelson Sauvin, Rakau, Waimea and Wai-iti.
The beer was released on May 21 and can be purchased via GAMMA’s webshop.
