The third edition is with Marcus - Brewer Assistant at ÅBEN.
How did your journey at ÅBEN begin?
I started as a bartender in April 2022 at the ÅBEN Pop up bar, while the brewery was still being built.
I told Bar Manager, Mick that I would like to help out if they needed it and shortly after, he called to ask if I could help with small handyman jobs. Phillip could see a need for a guy like me to help around the brewery and that’s how I got the job as Brewer Assistant.
What inspired you to become a brewer, and how did you get started in the beer brewing industry?
I worked at a Café before lockdown and was sent home due to the pandemic. I was at home for months and started to buy craft beers and gained more and more interest in beer.
You could say that lockdown is what brought me here.
Can you tell us about your first brew at ÅBEN?
Real Orignal is a coffee stout. I wanted to make either an IPA or a stout, as I like both. We decided on the coffee stout as ÅBEN hadn’t brewed a coffee brew before.
It’s an easy-to-drink stout at only 6%, as it’s not heavy like a stout usually is.
I used to work for Original Coffee and therefore it was the perfect story to ask them to collaborate with ÅBEN and provide the coffee for Real Original.
What is your favourite type of Beer? Also, which ÅBEN Beer is your favourite?
It depends on the season. It’s now starting to be spring/summer, so maybe a Vienna Lager right now but if it's colder, then maybe a stout but really, I can drink all types of beer.
If I could only drink one type of beer for the rest of my life, then maybe a Pale Ale.
I think my favourite ÅBEN beer is the lager Birch or Vienna lager Larch, as Jack is a master at making a lager.
A fun fact about you?
I went on the obligatory "find yourself" gap year trip with a friend and we bungee jumped from the highest one in Cusco, Peru in South America. That was a scary but fun experience.
I am also a big Arsenal fan because of the legend, Niklas Bendtner played there.
Anything else you would like to share?
Real Original is currently on tap at the bar in Kødbyen and it's still a great beer when the weather is good, as it’s not that heavy and easy to drink.
The bar is generally a great place to hang out with friends and a great place to try some good beers.
