The Brewery
ÅBEN’s brewery, located in the heart of Kødbyen, is the backbone of our beer production. With 5 fully automatic brewhouses, each with a 20 hl (2,000 liter) capacity, the brewery can produce up to 11 brews per day, totaling around 3.6 million liters of wort annually. This new setup offers a tenfold increase in capacity compared to the original brewery in Kolding. All brewing equipment is on display, allowing guests to see the process up close. Beer flows directly from the fermenters to 14 tanks hanging above the bar, ready to be served fresh. Stop by to see the production up close and taste the beer straight from the source.

The Beers
ÅBENs first beer, which has since turned into a signature beer, is called Bryg 61 (Brew 61), named after the number of attempts it took before getting the recipe exactly right. Today, ÅBEN produce 2-3 new beers every month which has led to a beer archive of more than 300 beers spanning wide from generously hopped IPA’s, and full-bodied imperial stouts to a wide selection of distinctive sours.
The Journey
ÅBEN was founded in 2017 by childhood friends Philip Hulgaard and Johannes Karstoft. By turning Philip’s childhood farm in Kolding into a brewery, it started off as a hobby next to full time jobs, but has since turned into a passion and way of life. Today, the brewery is run entirely by Philip. After the doors opened on 9th June, 2017, things moved fast. ÅBEN was named Brewery of the Year in 2019, marking the beginning of an exciting journey. Since then, ÅBEN has created electronic music festival O days, founded beer festival Kalas and has opened bars in Aarhus, Kødbyen, Roskilde, at Copenhagen Airport, and in Carlsberg Byen, with another on the way in Nordhavn and more to come.
